PsychByte: Suicide Attempts in Adolescence Associated with Physical Health Problems in Young Adulthood

Suicide Attempts in Adolescence Associated with Physical Health Problems in Young Adulthood

A study by Shanahan and colleagues (2016) found an association between one’s own suicide attempt in adolescence (or the attempt of someone close) and physical health problems in young adulthood, especially for males. The primary health problems found in this study were cardiovascular risk. Shanahan and colleagues recommended both physical and mental health care as a follow-up to one’s own suicide attempt or exposure to another’s suicide attempt in adolescence.
