PsychByte: Understanding Lenient Punishment for College Men Guilty of Rape

Understanding Lenient Punishment for College Men Guilty of Rape

In June 2016, the “Stanford Swimmer,” Brock Turner, was found guilty of raping an unconscious woman behind an alley dumpster. Despite the seriousness of the crime, however, the judge sentenced him to just 6 months in county jail rather than a minimum of 2 years in prison. For some, there is the persistent belief that certain men are not a danger to the community. In 2007, I co-authored an article on how positive stereotypes about men are associated with beliefs that minimize the seriousness of rape, blame the victim, and exonerate the perpetrator.  Click here to read the abstract. The full article can be obtained through the publisher (for account-holders or for purchase) or for free through Research Gate.
