PsychByte: Response to Tragedy within APA

Response to Tragedy within APA

It has been nearly 2 months since the tragic shootings in Orlando and approximately 1 month since the deaths of Philando Castile, Alton Sterling, and officers Michael Krol, Patrick Zamarripa, Brent Thompson, Sergeant Michael Smith, and Sr. Cpl. Lorne Ahrens. As we reflect back on these recent events in our nation, now part of our history, it is important to help clients (and friends, family, co-workers, etc.) explore their feelings about these events in an open and safe environment. This can be a challenging task, if attempted without support.

APA has responded in the following ways:
  • offered a list of suggestions for helping community members in Orlando cope after the shootings (click here)
  • offered suggestions specifically for LGBTQ people and Allies (click here)

Divisions within APA have been active in responding to these tragedies as well, including:
  • Division 9 - click here or here to read about recent activities related to Orlando
  • Division 17 - offered a response to the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling
  • Division 35 - click here to read a response to the Orlando shootings
  • Division 44 - offered this list of over 100 resources to help individuals cope with the Orlando shootings
