IPA Fall Conference Presentation Sneak Peek: Microaggressions and Clinical Multicultural Competence

Through his work in multicultural psychology, Derald Wing Sue (2010) established an inclusive taxonomy of subtle discrimination in which comments or behaviors expressed by an individual from a privileged social location communicate an often-unintentional, yet nevertheless demeaning message to someone whose identity includes membership in a relative marginalized social location.  These subtle slights are defined as "microaggressions." Although this work on microaggressions was originally focused on the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities, recent research has expanded this concept to address forms of implicit discrimination against a number of historically oppressed groups, including LGBTQ-identified individuals, women, and individuals with disabilities. An expanding body of research demonstrates the negative consequences of exposure to microaggressions for individuals holding marginalized identities, making an awareness of this construct particularly important for psychologists who are committed to multiculturally competent practice.
